I rarely got invited to parties. Even when I was in college and had a figure to die for. So the one time I was invited to one, I really looked forward to going. I put my best dress on, did my hair and makeup, and left early – just in case I got lost or something.
About midway there, I had to stop at a red light. As I was waiting, I heard someone say, “You need gas.” I looked at my gas gauge and saw that I had just over a half a tank. Plenty to get to the party and back, I thought. So, I brushed it off thinking I had imagined it. But then I heard it again – just a little bit differently. “You need to buy gas now.”
There was a gas station right there, on the right side of the road. So, I pulled into it. When I got out of my car I heard a roaring sound. It was accompanied by loud music and what sounded like screaming or shouting. I looked back down the road – towards the direction I had just come from. I saw two headlights approaching fast. A car zoomed past me – it must have been going a hundred miles an hour – or more. It went through the light – didn’t even slow down for it. The music and the shouting were so loud, and I saw five or six people in the car. As it passed the light, it tried to make the left turn but didn’t make it. The car drove full speed into a brick wall. Then there was an eerie dead silence. And the car was no longer recognizable.
Instinct kicked in, and I started to run towards it. “No,” the voice said. “Don’t go.” It sounded much harsher and more abrupt than before. I stopped dead in my tracks. I realized at that moment, that other than providing comfort, there was nothing I could do. I couldn’t even call for help – most people didn’t have cell phones back then. I guess it was the gas station attendant that called 911. While waiting for help to arrive, I prayed. I prayed hard. When the police and ambulances arrived, I told them what I saw and heard. Then I drove home.
I never learned the fate of anyone in that car, but to this day, I am grateful for the angel that intervened. It got me off the road in the nick of time, and then kept me from seeing something I might not have been able to handle. I feel very blessed to have a guardian angel looking out for me.
